Mark A. Serrott for Common Pleas Court
Mark Serrott is running for the “open seat” being vacated due to Judge Pfeiffer’s retirement. Mark is a candidate for Judge of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas. The Court of Common Pleas is an important trial court. A Judge of this Court presides over felony trials, including death penalty case, and all civil lawsuits involving more than $15,000.00. The Court also decides appeals from numerous administrative agencies, including The State Medical Board, The Pharmacy Board, The Ohio State Racing Commission, and The Nursing Board. The decisions made by a Judge in the Court of Common Pleas can have a dramatic impact on the lives of all citizens. Daily this Court deals with criminal cases, cases involving personal injuries, business disputes, and injured employees.
Mr. Serrott had dedicated his 31-year career to protecting the rights of his clients. Mr. Serrott’s practice has involved many media cases and many case of ground breaking precedent. For example, in 1985, Mr. Serrott represented a discharged employee and as a result, the law of Ohio was dramatically changed allowing unfairly fired employees to file suit to challenge wrongful terminations. (Mers v. Dispatch Printing Co., (1985), 19 Ohio St.,3d 100). Mr. Serrott has argued 3 cases before the Ohio Supreme Court. Mr. Serrott has over 60 jury trials and has tried hundreds of other cases, including contract disputes, domestic relations cases, juvenile cases, personal injury lawsuits, and criminal matters. Mr. Serrott has extensive administrative experience in representing owners and trainers before The Ohio State Racing Commission. Mr. Serrott has prior experience in virtually every case that the Court of Common Pleas handles. Mr. Serrott has also served as a juror during a trial at the Common Pleas Court.
In addition to practicing law on a full-time basis for 30-years, Mr. Serrott was an Adjunct Professor of Law for Legal Writing at The Moritz College of Law, (1987 – 1994), and Capital University Law School, (1994 – 1997). Eighteen of Mr. Serrott’s cases have been published in Ohio legal reporters. (Ohio only publishes cases that The Official Reporter of Ohio deems of legal significance and importance). Mr. Serrott’s extensive experience, both practical and teaching, also makes him well-qualified to serve as your Common Pleas Judge.
Mr. Serrott is the father of two and grandfather of four. He has been a life long resident of Franklin County, Ohio. Mr. Serrott graduated from Northland High School in 1972; O.S.U. (B.A. 1975); and O.S.U. School of Law J.D. (1979). Mr. Serrott has also coached the O.S.U. American Trial Lawyers Student Team to a national placing in 1996-1997. He also volunteers for Meals on Wheels, tutoring programs, and nursing home visitations and service for his Church. He is admitted to practice in all Ohio State Courts, the Federal Court for the Southern District of Ohio, and in the Federal 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. Mr. Serrott has been asked to lecture at dozens of seminars for other lawyers on issues ranging from criminal law to employment law. Mr. Serrott has numerous ideas for changes in procedures and the operation of the Court which would help expedite decisions and hopefully improve the system.
